Hello, I'm Tom
I'm a Junior Web Developer based in Andover, Hampshire. And it feels pretty damn good.
For the last two years I've been teaching myself the skills and technical knowledge necessary for web development around a full time retail job. Having spent a decade in that job, I woke up one day and decided enough was enough. I wasn't happy with my lot and I had to do something about it; so I started learning HTML, then CSS and now I'm a Junior Web Developer at a web design company in Hampshire.
I continue to learn my new trade - though at a much faster rate than before - and find out new ways of working, new tools and new techniques to use every day. I love this stuff; which is good because I get the impression you never stop learning in the world of web design and development.
The design of this website is inspired by the work of early 20th Century print designers; in particular Jan Tschichold.
I discovered his and others' work after being introducted to them by Jen Simmons of Layout Land. Since then I've been treated to the wealth of inspiration afforded by traditional print design of the pre- and inter-war eras; designs that until all too recently have been practically impossible to accomplish on the web using the limited tools we had available. However, with the advent of CSS Grid and a whole package of new and improved layout options, we're finally able to explore these fascinating graphic design choices in a distinctly webby way.
